Living Terrors was authored by Dr. Michael Osterholm, who is currently leading a civilian bioterrorist defense organization.  Dr. Osterholm has extensive experience in addressing biological and chemical dangers, and in first hand medical support in supporting large scale and communicable diseases.  Dr. Osterholm describes the various biological threats in a easy to read format, using various hypothetical scenarios, followed by real-life research and analysis.

The most gripping part of this book is the description by Dr. Osterholm of what would happen to a major metropolitan area if a terrorist were to release biological threatening material (such as anthrax) simply into this wind.   Dr. Osterholm describes a 1993 study by the US Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), where the OTA estimated that an aerial line release of properly prepared anthrax over the Washington DC area could blanket an area of 300 square miles, killing roughly 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 civilians.

Dr. Osterholm also describes the threat posed by smallpox, and need for greater coordination among hospitals, and ability to have large scale facilities for bioterrorism response, as well as coordinated law enforcement planning to address communicable disease outbreaks.  Dr. Osterman's book also describes various chemical attacks, including experience of Japanese terrorists using Sarin.

Judith Miller's book, Germs, is a compilation of her research on the Germ warfare (biological and chemical) performed by Iraq, United States, and Russia, and the fears in 1990 that Iraq was going to attack the US with anthrax and other biochem weapons during the Persian Gulf War.

Judith also describes the first biological attack in the US by the India cult of Bhagwan Shree Ranjneesh in Oregon with salmonella poisoning and the catastrophic result in the city of Dalles, Oregon on an unsuspecting populace.

Judith provides comprehensive historical, factual, and political research into discussions and studies that have been done on this matter, including the discovery of various biological and chemical weapons facilities built by Iraq, the Iraq history of poisoning the Kurds with Mustard gas, and the goals of the Iraq Islamist to use biological and chemical weapons for their global jihad.  Judith also discusses the role of other terrorist groups in the Middle East, Japan and other parts of the world in developing such weapons to threaten innocent citizens.
