Georgia Emergency Operations Plan

Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Operations Plan

Where are the evacuation routes for Fulton County?

An effective short-notice emergency evacuation of the city is not practical.   However, if we have several days of advance warning of a catastrophe, Atlanta could possibly be evacuated using ALL routes, including the inbound highway lanes (under police supervision and direction).   Do not ever enter the Wrong-Way lanes of any highway without specific police permission.   Collateral (local) streets would also be used to help evacuate.   During a county-wide evacuation, MARTA would be available to give free rides to safety (normal bus routes would be suspended; just get on the first bus you can).   During neighborhood evacuations (for floods and other local emergencies) a special MARTA bus will transport residents to a nearby shelter, and to the Red Cross registration center where residents can report their involvement in the emergency.
To assist in your evacuation:
  1. Keep your car in working order and keep your gas tank at least half full at all times.
  2. Always know where your family members are and how to contact them.
  3. Keep an emergency kit in your car.
  4. Keep your identification and proof of residency with you.
  5. Keep a radio with you.
  6. Follow instructions of your local authorities.
  7. Do not worry about family members who are at other locations; you will find them after the emergency passes.
